What is the Black Business Opportunity & Investment Study?

The mission of The Black Business Opportunity & Investment Study is to develop a sustainable process of data collection and analysis that supports the creation, sustainability, and growth of Black-owned businesses in the City of Richmond.

This study is sponsored by Startup Virginia, is funded by Altria, the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond, and Dominion Energy. In-kind support provided by Capital One.


Who is the team behind the study?

Todd Waldo of Hugh Helen LLC, and Melody Joy Short, Co-founder of Richmond Night Market and the Jackson Ward Collective + Director of Marketing & Communications at the Metropolitan Business League, will design, lead, and execute the study. Shannon Bass, Founder/Principal Designer of Ryano Graphics, will lead the communications, visual strategy and design.


What is the goal of the study?

The study will provide a clear understanding of the Black business landscape in Richmond and will allow nonprofits, organizations, and the City of Richmond to be more strategic, inclusive, and equitable when creating and delivering resources to support the growth and sustainability of Black businesses.


How long will the survey be open?

Feb 2021 through May 2021
The survey is open and our team will host a number of Community Conversations.

June 2021 through August 2021
Our team will conduct our analysis, process design and reporting.

The survey can be completed in less than 5 minutes.


Business based in the City of Richmond and those who primarily operate in the City of Richmond.
